Classes

Our  Classes

The Governing Body recognises the importance of class size with a mixed age and ability range within a small school.  It has therefore placed a great emphasis on a high staff/pupil ratio.  The school runs three classes.  These classes are constructed to ensure the lowest class size possible.  There are Learning Support Assistants who work with groups of children and individuals to enable us to maintain a high adult/child ratio.

Each class covers two or three age groups.  Within each class children work in groups according to their level or ability rather than merely their age.  Small class size ensures the children can be taught in small groups or as individuals.  The staff can also ensure each child’s needs and potential are catered for.  There is also a degree of flexibility between classes when necessary to give an individual child the most suitable learning experiences for their needs.

Reception children

When children start school in their reception year, this is known as the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which is a continuation of the curriculum they have used at pre-school. This is a separate curriculum from the National Curriculum which the children begin to study in September following their 5th birthday. Our school covers key stages one and two of the National Curriculum. Key Stage 1 is years 1 and 2 (ages 5 to 7) and corresponds to the Infant years. Key Stage 2 is years 3 to 6 (ages 7 to 11) which are the Junior year groups.

A variety of teaching arrangements are used, including individual teaching, small group, year group, whole class and whole Key Stage teaching.  In organising the school and the curriculum we ensure that we make the best use of staff’s varied expertise.
